Upload a Contract for AI Review: Main Agreement, Appendices, and Specifications

You've received a contract from a counterparty — along with three appendices, a specification sheet, and a supplementary agreement. You need to review everything. Where do you start when uploading for AI analysis?

This article is a practical guide to uploading a document package to SmartSplitAI Contract Review.

What you can upload

SmartSplitAI accepts several formats:

• DOCX — the recommended format. Preserves structure, tables, tracked changes, and comments.
• Text-layer PDF — works if you can select and copy text with your mouse.
• TXT — plain text. Good for quick checks but loses formatting.

Scanned documents, photos, and PDFs without a text layer are not analyzed as text.

Main agreement + appendices: how to upload

A typical document package consists of several files:

1. Main agreement. Contains the core terms: parties, scope, price, deadlines, liability, termination.

2. Appendices (Addenda). Detail the scope of work, service specifications, payment schedule, technical requirements.

3. Specifications. Specific parameters: quantities, quality standards, delivery dates, unit prices.

4. Supplementary agreements. Modify or add to the terms of the main agreement.

SmartSplitAI processes these as a package — the AI sees relationships between files and analyzes the documents together.

File preparation tips

DOCX — the primary format

If the contract arrived as a DOCX, that's the best case. Keep the file as is. Don't convert to PDF — you'll lose Track Changes analysis and version comparison.

Text-layer PDF

Open the PDF and try selecting text with your mouse. If text highlights and copies — the file works. If the cursor draws a selection rectangle and nothing copies — it's a scan and won't be analyzed as text.

Appendices and addenda

Upload them together with the main agreement. The AI cross-references:

• amounts in the agreement vs the payment schedule in the appendix;
• deadlines in the agreement vs the timeline in the specification;
• changes introduced by supplementary agreements.

What not to do

• Don't photograph the contract with your phone. Image quality won't allow text extraction.
• Don't scan to PDF as an image. Default scanner settings often create PDFs without a text layer.
• Don't convert DOCX to PDF on purpose. You lose version information.
• Don't merge all files into one. Upload separately — the AI finds the connections.

What happens after upload

1. The system extracts text from all files.

2. AI identifies the structure: parties, subject matter, obligations, payments, deadlines.

3. Cross-references data between the main agreement and appendices.

4. Produces the output: risks for each clause from your role's perspective (payer or receiver).

The output is a structured analysis, not a ready-made decision. AI shows you which clauses deserve attention. The decision to sign remains yours.
